White Oak (Quercus alba)
A majestic, long-lived native North American tree celebrated for its strength, ecological value, and beautiful canopy. Native To Eastern and Central North America (from Quebec and Minnesota south to Florida and Texas). Thrives in USDA Hardiness Zone 3 through 9. Grows to 60 to 80 feet tall and equally wide (can reach over 100 feet in the wild).
Full sun is highly preferred. It can tolerate partial shade when young but becomes less shade-tolerant as it matures. Prefers acidic to neutral soil (pH 5.5 to 6.5). It can tolerate slightly alkaline soil but may develop chlorosis (yellowing leaves) if the pH is too high. Thrives in deep, moist, well-drained loams. It adapts well to various textures, including coarse sands and heavy clays, provided the site drains well. It has excellent drought tolerance once its deep taproot system is fully established, but it does not tolerate poorly drained, permanently soggy soils.
White Oak is one of the most economically and ecologically important trees in North America. White oak wood is famously rot-resistant and water-impermeable due to microscopic growths called tyloses that plug its pores. It is the premier choice for whiskey and wine barrels, boat building, tight cooperage, hardwood flooring, and fine furniture.
Its acorns are sweeter and less bitter than those of red oaks, making them a vital food source for deer, turkeys, wood ducks, squirrels, and birds. It also hosts hundreds of caterpillar species, fueling the local food web.
It makes an exceptional specimen or shade tree for large lawns, parks, and golf courses, offering deep summer shade and rich red-to-burgundy autumn color.
Native American tribes historically boiled and washed the acorns to remove tannins, grinding them into a nutritious flour or meal.
Ships with leaves in Spring and Summer and dormant without leaves in Fall and Winter.
