Trojan Fir (Abies nordmanniana subsp. equi-trojani)

Trojan Fir us a rare, elegant, and highly fragrant conifer native to the mountains of northwestern Turkey (Mount Ida). It is a subspecies of the Nordmann Fir that and is recognized for having thicker, blunter, and more lustrous dark green needles with silvery-white bands underneath. It is highly prized as a premium, long-lasting, and dense "living" Christmas tree and is generally more heat and drought-tolerant than other true firs. One of the best fir trees for needle retention and fragrance.

Trojan Fir  has a dense, symmetrical, pyramidal shape with strongly layered, horizontal branches that hold low to the ground. Foliage is glossy, deep green, 1–1½" soft needles with two silver bands underneath, which release a citrus-resin scent when crushed.

Typically grows 50–80 feet tall and 10–30 feet wide at maturity. Trojan Fir thrives in USDA Zones 5-7 and zone 8 on the West Coast. It performs best in cool, temperate climates. It is generally not recommended for the hot, humid summers of the deep South. It is noted for its late bud break, which helps it avoid late spring frost damage. Choose a location with full sun (at least 6 hours daily) for the densest foliage. Prefers rich, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. It tolerates light alkalinity better than other firs but will struggle in heavy clay and areas with poor drainage (waterlogging).

Trojan Fir  is excellent as a four-season, high-profile specimen in large landscapes. Good for windbreaks and screens in rural, cold-climate landscapes.

Highly sought after as a Christmas tree for its excellent needle retention and pleasant fragrance.

Due to its dense foliage and manageable growth, it is a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts.
