Sugar Maple - Acer saccharum
A large deciduous tree known for its vibrant fall foliage, producing wood for furniture and lumber, and providing sap for maple syrup. Requires well-drained, fertile, and slightly acidic soil in a location with full sun to partial shade.
Can reach heights of 80 to 120 feet with a spread of 70 to 80 feet when mature. Give it plenty of space, at least 20 feet from structures. It struggles in compacted or overly dry soils. Water young trees until roots are established. Established trees are fairly drought-tolerant but benefit from deep watering during prolonged dry spells to maintain health and sap production. Has fine, dense, shallow roots that make it difficult to grow plants underneath it. Minimal pruning is needed.
Sugar Maples have a dense crown and beautiful yellow, orange, and red leaves in the fall.
