The Staghorn Japanese Cedar (Thujopsis dolabrata), is a slow-growing evergreen conifer native to Japan. It has dense, glossy green foilage with striking white undersides and flaking reddish-brown bark. It makes a bold, unique specimen plant for moist, cool landscapes. Planted as a specimen tree in large gardens and parks. Timber is rot resistant. Often used in high end Christmas decorations and wreathes.
Grows in USDA zones 5 through 7. Mature Height is 30 to 50 feet tall in cultivation, with a spread of 15 to 25 feet wide. Requires full sun to partial shade; appreciates afternoon shade in hot summer regions. Likes rich, organic, and evenly moist. It has no drought tolerance and fails in dry earth. Highly adaptable, growing well in acidic, neutral, or mildly alkaline soils (pH range roughly 5.0 to 7.5). Needs shelter from harsh, dry winter winds and exposed freezing locations.
