Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum) is a fast-growing, large deciduous tree (50-100 ft tall) native to the eastern and midwestern United States. Its deeply lobed leaves are green above and silver underneath, creating a shimmering effect. It thrives in moist to wet well draining, acidic soils. But, it is tolerant of wet, clay-heavy soils. Likes full sun. Silver Maples are incredibly hardy and adaptable, thriving in USDA Zones 3 through 9. Tolerates the warmth and humidity of Zone 9
Known for rapid growth, it develops a broad, vase-like shape with brittle wood. Avoid fertilizing, as fast growth can lead to weaker wood. Young trees need consistent moisture. Water regularly during the first few growing seasons. Once established, it can withstand seasonal flooding, and it handles dry, upland soils surprisingly well.
It produces yellowish-red flowers in early spring.
Plant at least 50 feet away from foundations, sidewalks, and sewer lines. Their roots are aggressive and can easily crack concrete or clog pipes. Often used for quick shade with rapid growth up to 7 feet per year.
