Nordmann Fir (Abies nordmanniana) - 3 year Bare Root Trees
Also known as the Caucasian Fir, this is a dense, slow-growing, pyramidal evergreen conifer. It is highly valued for its attractive, glossy dark green needles and excellent needle retention. It is widely used as a premium Christmas tree.
It is hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 7, and Zone 8 in the Pacific Northwest.
The needles are flattened, about 1 to 1.5 inches long, shiny dark green on top, with two distinctive white stomatal bands underneath. The tips are usually blunt or slightly notched.
In cultivation, it typically reaches 40–60 feet tall and 15–25 feet wide, but can grow up to 200 feet in its native habitat. It grows at a slow to moderate rate. It thrives in cool, humid climates and generally performs poorly in the hot, humid summers south of Zone 6.
Nordmann Fir prefers full sun to partial shade. It requires protection from strong, drying winds. Grows well in rich, acidic to neutral, moist, and well-drained soils. While it can tolerate clay, it grows best in loamy or sandy soils enriched with organic matter.
Nordmann Fir requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. It is not drought-tolerant and may show needle browning if allowed to dry out for too long. Young plants benefit from phosphorus-rich fertilizers to encourage root development. Established trees may be fertilized every few years with a balanced 10-10-10 formula in early spring.
