Thuja occidentalis 'Little Giant' (commonly known as the Little Giant Globe Arborvitae) is a slow-growing, compact evergreen shrub highly prized for its neat, naturally spherical habit and rich green foliage.
Hardy in USDA Zones 3 to 8. It is extremely cold-hardy and can withstand harsh winter temperatures down to -40°F. It slowly reaches 3 to 4 feet tall and wide (occasionally touching 5–6 feet in ideal conditions after many years). It maintains a tight, round globe shape without requiring regular shearing.

Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight) but will tolerate partial shade. Shadier spots may result in slightly thinner foliage. Thrives in moist, fertile, and well-drained soil. While it can cope with damp soils, it has a low tolerance for dry or drought conditions and needs consistent watering during dry spells. It is not fussy about pH, growing successfully in a wide range from slightly acidic to alkaline soils (6.0 to 8.0).

The parent species (Thuja occidentalis) is native to the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. Unlike other arborvitae cultivars that take on a distinct bronzed or burnt-orange cast in the cold, 'Little Giant' is celebrated for its strong winter color retention. It remains a rich, dense green year-round, though it may shift to a slightly softer or lighter gray-green during peak freezing months.

Thuja occidentalis is a popular choice for bonsai enthusiasts. Because 'Little Giant' is naturally a dwarf variant with compact, tight scale-like foliage, it is easier to train into miniature forms. It responds very well to directional trimming and wiring, allowing you to create beautiful formal upright, informal upright, or twin-trunk bonsai styles.
Little Giant is perfect for framing entryways or softening corners along house foundations due to its neat, predictable size. Excellent for defining pathways or creating short, formal evergreen hedges that require zero maintenance to keep their shape.
Use in Rock Gardens & Small Spaces. Its slow growth rate prevents it from overtaking small beds, making it perfect for rock gardens. Also adapts beautifully to large patio pots or planters for year-round structure.
