Jewel is a black raspberry that’s cold hardy and provides bountiful yields beginning its second year. Rich with raspberry flavor, this variety is ideal for jams, juices, baking, as well as fresh eating.
When planting, please provide fertile, mildly acidic, well-draining soil. Because black raspberries are more susceptible to viral diseases, do not plant red, gold, or purple raspberries within 100 feet of them. Mature plants will be approximately 4 – 5’ tall and 3 – 4’ wide, so we recommend spacing them between 3 and 4 feet apart.
Be sure to water the plants deeply and regularly throughout their first growing season. This will help them establish a solid root system. Fertilize each year before new growth begins in spring and, after harvest, prune older canes that have fruited to the ground. Do not cut the newest years’ canes as these will be the ones that produce fruit next season.
