Japanese Umbrella Pine (Sciadopitys verticillata) is a rare, slow-growing conical to pyramidal conifer native to Japan. Often called a "living fossil,". It is not a pine tree, it belongs to its own unique ancient plant family. It is highly prized for its prehistoric look, perfect symmetry, and whorls of thick, glossy needles that resemble the spokes of an umbrella. Customers at our nursery want to touch it's unique thick needles. These are grown from seed, so each tree is unique.
Grows in USDA Zones 5 through 8. It thrives in the Pacific Northwest but will struggle in extreme southern heat of zone 9 or in very harsh northern winters Zone 4 or colder. Need wind protection in Zone 5.

Plant in full sun to partial shade. (Provide light afternoon shade in hotter climates to prevent needle scorch).

Prefers rich, organically fertile, and slightly acidic (pH 5.0 - 6.0). Requires consistently moist, well-draining soil. It is intolerant of heavy, soggy clay or prolonged drought.

Grows extremely slow (about 6 to 12 inches per year).

Has a mature height of 25 to 40 feet (up to 70 feet in its native habitat after many decades) and a spread of 15 to 20 feet.

Most frequently planted as a focal point or conversation piece in lawns, Asian-themed gardens, or rock gardens. In Japan, the water-resistant wood is traditionally used for boat and ship construction, while the bark is used for caulking.
