Issai Kiwi (Actinidia arguta 'Issai') is a highly popular, compact, self-fertile variety of hardy kiwi. Unlike standard kiwis, it produces smooth, grape-sized fruit that can be eaten whole without peeling. Very sweet, containing 20% sugar and 8 times more Vitamin C than citrus. It is fast-growing, highly productive, often bearing 100 pounds of fruit annually and prized for its ornamental, vining foliage

Hardy in zones 3–9.  Climbs to 12–20 feet tall with a spread of 3–5 feet. It has a much more restrained and compact growth habit than other kiwi varieties. Can be pruned to a bush shape if pruned yearly forming a 5 X 5 foot structure that does not need a trellis.

Issai is self-pollinating (does not require a separate male vine), though planting a companion male vine can increase fruit size and yield.

Requires full sun to partial shade (at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal fruit production).  Prefers rich, loamy, and well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH (5.5 - 6.5). Avoid planting in waterlogged or heavy clay areas without proper amendment.

Needs regular moisture; however, soils shouldn't become waterlogged. Consistent watering is crucial during establishment and fruit development. If not pruned to form a bush, Issai requires a very sturdy support structure like a trellis, arbor, or fence to train the vigorous woody vines. Will yield more if not pruned to a bush form.

Pruning is essential. Major shaping should be done during winter dormancy, cutting last year's stems back to 3-4 buds beyond the last fruiting area.  Avoid pruning after Winter or when temperatures are over 35 degrees as Kiwi will bleed sap if weather is warming for Spring.
