Heritage River Birch (Betula nigra 'Cully') is a fast-growing, deciduous tree celebrated for its peeling, salmon-white bark and resistance to disease. Heritage River birch is highly resistant to the bronze birch borer. While highly susceptible species like European white birch are frequently attacked, the Heritage variety thrives naturally and rarely falls victim to these pests, making it the top recommended substitute. Thriving in USDA zones 4 to 9, it is a versatile, low-maintenance landscape addition.
Plant in full sun to partial shade (requires at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily). Prefers rich, moist, and slightly acidic soils (pH 5.0–6.5). It adapts exceptionally well to heavy clay and wet, periodically flooded areas. Requires deep, consistent watering, especially when young. Mature trees possess moderate drought tolerance. Generally doesn't require regular feeding, but a slow-release, balanced fertilizer can be applied in early spring for a boost.
Excellent as a specimen or focal point tree, often planted in multi-trunked clumps to show off its peeling bark year-round. Its robust root system helps stabilize the soil along stream banks, ponds, and low-lying areas. Provides excellent cover for birds. The spring catkins and fall seeds serve as valuable food sources, and the foliage acts as a larval host for several butterfly species.
Prune in late summer or early fall. Avoid pruning in the spring ("bleeding season") to prevent the tree from losing large amounts of sap. Apply a thick layer of organic mulch around the base to keep roots cool and retain soil moisture, but ensure the mulch does not directly touch the trunk. Unlike many other birch varieties, the Heritage cultivar is highly resistant to the bronze birch borer and is less prone to leaf spot. Ensure your soil pH stays in the acidic range to prevent yellowing leaves (iron chlorosis).
