Grey Owl Juniper - (*Juniperus virginiana* 'Grey Owl')
A lively evergreen shrub with widely spreading branches and loose, silvery-grey foliage. Its silver-blue berries make this juniper perfect for holiday decorations.
Grey Owl Juniper (*Juniperus virginiana* 'Grey Owl') is a hardy, low-growing evergreen shrub ideal for USDA Zones 4–9. Thriving in full sun, it adapts well to a range of soil pH levels and prefers well-draining soils, from sandy to rocky types, tolerating poor, dry conditions. It reaches 2–3 feet in height and spreads 4–6 feet within the first five years, eventually maturing to 2–3 feet tall with a 6–8 foot spread.
With slow to moderate growth and excellent drought, wind, and salt tolerance, it’s a great choice for coastal gardens, erosion control, rock gardens, mass plantings, and borders.
Also makes an excellent bonsai.
The Grey Owl Juniper requires minimal maintenance and only light pruning in late winter or early spring if shaping is desired. It is deer-resistant and has excellent cold hardiness, although it should be planted in areas with good drainage to prevent root rot. The blue-green foliage develops attractive purple hues in fall and winter, adding seasonal interest. This juniper’s resilience, low water needs, and compact, sprawling habit make it ideal for mass plantings, ground cover, borders, and slope stabilization.
