Fragaria chiloensis (Beach or Coastal Strawberry) is a hardy, evergreen, prostrate groundcover native to the Pacific Coast and Chile. It thrives in USDA zones 4–9. It features glossy, dark green leaves, five-petaled white spring flowers, and small, sweet, edible, seedy red berries that attract wildlife. Make a great lawn substitute. Quickly spreads by runners.
Plant in Full sun for maximum blooms and fruit, but it will tolerate partial shade. Prefers loose, sandy, or well-draining soil with a mildly acidic to neutral pH (5.6 - 6.5). It is quite drought-tolerant, especially in coastal settings. Low to moderate water requirements once established.
Very low Maintenance. Mow or cut back hard in early spring to prevent stem buildup and encourage fresh, vigorous growth.
