Echinacea 'Pixie Meadowbrite'
A highly popular, patented dwarf perennial coneflower celebrated for its compact size, exceptionally long blooming window, and vibrant pink petals wrapped around a coppery-orange central cone. Bred by Dr. Jim Ault at the Chicago Botanic Garden, it represents a resilient hybrid cross between three native North American species: E. purpurea, E. tennesseensis, and E. angustifolia.
Grows in USDA Hardiness Zone: Zones 4 to 9 (Can handle cold winters down to −20°F). Plant is highly compact; typically reaches only 15 to 20 inches tall and spreads 18 to 24 inches wide. Extremely adaptable; thrives across acidic, neutral, and alkaline soils (6.0 to 7.5 is ideal).
As an intentional hybrid, this specific cultivar is a United States hybrid. However, its parent lineages are entirely native to the prairies, woodlands, and meadows of eastern and central North America.
Pixie Meadowbrite requires full sun (at least 6 hours of direct daily sunlight). While it can tolerate very light afternoon shade, less sun results in fewer flowers and weaker, floppier stems. Prefers average, light loamy, or sandy soils. It cannot survive consistently wet or soggy soil, especially during winter dormancy. It tolerates poor or lean soil far better than overly rich, highly fertilized soil.
Water once or twice a week during its first season to establish the roots. Once established, it has excellent drought tolerance and thrives on deep, infrequent watering.
Due to its petite stature and rigid, upright stems, Pixie Meadowbrite is incredibly versatile in the landscape. Ideal for the front of garden borders, rock gardens, urban cottage gardens, and mass prairie-style plantings.
Unlike larger coneflowers that get top-heavy, its dwarf habit makes it a perfect selection for patio pots and window boxes. Its horizontal pink petals and raised cones are massive magnets for butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds throughout the summer. If you leave the spent flower cones on the stalks in autumn instead of deadheading them, the blackened cones provide architectural winter interest and act as a natural feeding station for goldfinches and other foraging birds.
The sturdy, non-drooping stems and long vase-life make them exceptional fresh-cut flowers. Fortified by its native parentage, it is highly deer and rabbit resistant.
