Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis)- Potted in 5" deep band pot - 24-36 inches tall
Eastern Redbud, is a majestic deciduous tree native to North America. Its distinctive feature lies in the breathtaking display of pea-like vibrant pink to purple flowers that grace its bare branches in early spring, before the emergence of its leaves.
This tree thrives in environments that receive partial to full sunlight, ideally soaking in at least six hours of sunlight daily. While it can tolerate some shade, particularly in hotter climates, optimal growth occurs in sunnier locations.
Eastern Redbud shows adaptability to a various soil types, favoring well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. It can flourish in clay, loamy, or sandy soils, provided they offer good drainage to prevent potential issues like root rot. Flourishes in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9. This resilience allows them to withstand harsh winters and scorching summers.
This deciduous tree is a moderate grower, reaching heights of approximately 20 to 30 feet with a similar spread. Its heart-shaped leaves unfurl after the spring bloom, transitioning from initial reddish or purplish hues to a lush green during the summer months. Come autumn, these leaves turn a vibrant yellow before gracefully falling. The trunk and branches often showcase a distinctive grayish-brown bark that becomes deeply furrowed as the tree matures.
The Eastern Redbud has edible seeds, historically consumed by Native American tribes, birds and wildlife. Seeds are mildly sweet or nutty flavor and can be eaten raw or cooked. Furthermore, these trees play a crucial role in attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies, enhancing the biodiversity of their environment.
