Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is a tough evergreen tree native to eastern North America. It thrives in USDA zones 2–9, reaching a mature size of 30–50 feet tall and 8–20 feet wide. It is used for privacy screens, windbreaks, and wildlife cover, and requires full sun and well-drained soil.
Native to 37 states across the eastern half of the United States and southeastern Canada. Ranges from Maine and Florida westward to the Great Plains and Texas.
Used for privacy hedges, windbreaks, and property line screening. Dense branches offer nesting sites and winter shelter for birds, while female berries feed cedar waxwings. Rot-resistant aromatic timber is used for fence posts, outdoor furniture, and lining closets. Eastern Red Cedar is widely considered deer-resistant, though young saplings may sometimes be browsed. Its aromatic foliage and prickly needles typically deter hungry deer.
Grows to a height of 30 to 50 feet tall and 8 to 20 feet wide. Pyramidal or columnar when young, becoming more open or rounded with age. Prefers full sun (at least 6 hours daily). Highly adaptable to clay, sand, limestone, or rocky soils, as long as they drain well. Drought-tolerant once established; water deeply only during prolonged dry spells. Does not need supplemental fertilizer in average soils. Low maintenance; prune dead or stray branches in late winter.
