Deer fern (Blechnum spicant) is a compact, evergreen groundcover native to western North America, Europe, and parts of Asia, thriving in USDA zones 5–8. It features distinct flat sterile fronds and upright fertile fronds. It is ideal for shade gardens and wildlife forage.

Native to Coastal areas from southern Alaska through British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and down to central California, plus northern Idaho.
Perfect as a low-maintenance evergreen groundcover for shady woodland borders. Provides crucial winter forage and habitat cover for deer, elk, and small forest mammals.

Plant in partial shade to deep, heavy shade. Avoid hot direct sun. Likes moist, humus-rich, and acidic to neutral pH. Tolerates heavy clay if moisture is consistent. Keep soil evenly moist and provide regular watering during dry summer months.
Very low upkeep. Clear out old, faded fronds in late winter or early spring just before new green fiddleheads emerge.
