Crandall Black Currant Plants- Largest & Sweetest

Crandall Black Currant Ribes odoratum 'Crandall'.
This thornless heirloom variety was first introduced in 1888. Fruit is the largest currant, up to 3/4 inches in diameter and much larger than other black currants (which are actually Ribes nigrum).

Crandall has a nice sweet flavor with a hint of cloves. Great for fresh eating. Does not have the typical musky black currant after taste. Has 5 times the vitamin C as oranges. Jams, syrups, pies and dried currants are much milder than when made with black currants.

A beautiful ornamental shrub for the edible landscape. Beautiful showy fragrant yellow flowers are followed by large berries that ripen in mid - late summer. The gooseberry shaped leaves will turn a bright red and yellow in the fall. Grows 3 - 7 foot tall with a 3 - 5 foot spread in full sun or part shade. Grow as a hedge or espalier against a fence or building. Attracts birds and butterflies. Needs to be planted near other currant/gooseberry varieties for pollination. Very drought and heat tolerant. Native to American Midwest, west through the Great Plains to Canada. Grows in USDA Zones 2 - 8. Very productive.

Easy to care for. Mulch with 2 - 3 inches of organic mulch. Prune annually to remove the oldest stems, and apply compost or balanced fertilizer in Spring.
