Cotoneaster dammeri, commonly known as Bearberry Cotoneaster, is a fast-growing, low-hugging, evergreen to semi-evergreen woody shrub. It forms a dense, prostrate mat with trailing branches that easily root wherever they touch the soil. The plant is celebrated for its year-round visual appeal, featuring glossy dark-green leaves that turn purple-burgundy in winter, tiny white spring flowers, and showy, bright-red autumn berries.
Hardy in Zones 5 through 8 (occasionally successful up to zone 9 or 10 in ideal microclimates). Grows 6 to 12 inches tall and spreads extensively to a width of 6 to 12 feet. Likes full sun to partial shade; denser growth and heavier berry yields occur in full sun. Requires low to moderate watering once established; highly drought-tolerant when established. Prefers well-drained, loamy soils, but adapts remarkably well to poor, sandy, rocky, or clay substrates. Thrives in acidic, neutral, and alkaline soils (pH ranging broadly from below 6.0 to above 8.0).
Cotoneaster dammeri is excellent for covering flat, large, or open sunny areas efficiently. Ideal for stabilizing steep banks and slopes due to its self-rooting creeping habit. Commonly used in rock gardens or allowed to cascade elegantly over retaining walls and stone borders. Highly attractive to nectar-seeking bees in the spring and fruit-eating birds in the late autumn and winter.
Widely used and highly prized for bonsai. It is considered an excellent species for both beginners and experienced enthusiasts because it is durable, fast-growing, and responds well to heavy pruning. It naturally features small leaves, attractive miniature bark, tiny flowers, and colorful fruit—making it perfect for smaller bonsai categories like Shohin or Mame. While cold-hardy in the landscape, its roots must be protected from extreme freezing conditions when planted in a shallow container or pot.
