Clematis montana (commonly known as Mountain Clematis or Anemone Clematis)
A highly vigorous, large-scale deciduous climbing vine. It is widely celebrated in landscaping for its prolific late-spring blanket of small, pink, star-like flowers that often emit a sweet vanilla or chocolate fragrance. Montana Clematis (Clematis montana) attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds to its abundant spring flowers.
Available as 2.5 x 3.5 inch starter plant.
Grows in USDA Hardiness Zones Zones 5 to 9. This is an exceptionally fast-growing vine that reaches 15 to 40 feet in height (length) with a 8 to 15 feet spread. It requires full sun to partial shade for the foliage to maximize blooming. It prefers the classic clematis environment: "sun in the eyes, shade at the feet," meaning the roots should be kept cool and shaded by mulch, rocks, or shallow-rooted companion plants. The soil must be rich in organic matter and well-draining, as it is sensitive to waterlogging.
It prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.0 to 8.0). It tolerates chalky soils well but can struggle in highly acidic environments. It is native to the mountainous regions of Asia, stretching from the Himalayas through central and western China to Taiwan. Despite its common name, it is not native to the U.S. state of Montana).
While primarily grown for its massive spring show, the foliage offers modest autumn interest. It emerge with bronze or purplish spring foliage that matures to dark green, changing into a clear yellow or rustic bronze-green before dropping in late autumn.
Though unconventional due to its aggressive twining habit and large vine structure, Clematis montana can be trained as a spectacular accent bonsai or semi-cascade style plant. Because it is a "Group 1" clematis that forms flowers on old wood, it develops thick, gnarly, woody trunks relatively quickly over time. Regular pinching and post-bloom pruning are essential to manage its vigorous elongation and encourage compact branching in a container.
Due to its immense size and strength, it is ideally used as a vertical architectural screen to blanket large fences, brick walls, pergolas, arbors, or unsightly outbuildings. It can also be allowed to scramble naturally through large mature trees or hard shrubs.
