In late spring to early summer, it produces small, yellowish-green flowers, followed by large, reddish-brown fruits in late summer to early fall. The fruits, often referred to as "Chinese dates," can be eaten fresh, dried, or used in various culinary applications. The fruit is very sweet when ripe. Hot summers are needed to ripen the fruit. If your summers are cooler, pick fruit when half brown and half green before your first frost and bring it inside a warm area to finish ripening. Fruit can be eaten fresh, dried, in preserves, roasted, juiced, boiled as a tea and in baking.
Jujubes has been used as a Chinese medicinal herb for over 3,000 years. Google health benefits of Jujube for more detailed information.
