Burgundy Lace Hazelnut (Corylus avellana 'Burgundy Lace') is an ornamental tree known for its deeply dissected, wine-red lacy foliage and high resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight. Developed by Oregon State University.
Hardy in USDA Zones 4 through 8. It thrives in temperate climates and handles cold winters down to 15 degrees F.
Likes Full sun to partial shade. The signature red foliage is deepest in full sun but can transition to a bronze-green as summer progresses. Adapts well to most soil types (including clay) and pH levels. It prefers average to moist, well-draining soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely.
Moderately vigorous and highly tolerant of urban pollution. However, like most hazelnuts, it produces basal suckers that require periodic removal if you want to maintain a clean, single or multi-trunked tree form.
Typically reaches 16 to 25 feet tall at maturity. Has a loose, upright-spreading canopy roughly 15 to 20 feet wide. Grows at a medium rate and features showy, dark red male catkins in late winter. 'Burgundy Lace' does produce edible nuts, but they are generally smaller and produced in lower yields compared to commercial hazelnut varieties. Burgundy Lace produces little viable pollen of its own, so you will need to plant another compatible hazelnut cultivar nearby to achieve good nut yields.
Shipped dormant without leaves in fall and winter and with leaves in spring and summer
Use tree guards for the first few years to protect against deer and wildlife. Or, spray with Plantskydd Deer repellent. Look for Plantskydd under Deer and Rodent repellents in our catalog.
Hazelnuts abundant, early-season pollen feeds bees, and the plants host numerous moth/butterfly species, providing vital early food and habitat for pollinators and wildlife.
Hazelnuts can be pruned year-round. Thin root suckers to prevent thickets. Harvest in fall (Aug.-Oct) as soon as husks turn tan and split open. If you wait harvest later, wildlife will get nuts.
Free Shipping to most locations. We cannot ship larger boxes or boxes to AK, HI, APO, US Territories, or areas considered remote, without a freight surcharge.
