Black Dragon Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica 'Black Dragon')
This evergreen specimen tree has lots of character. Rich light green needles turns almost black green in winter. Grows quickly to 4-6 feet tall, then slowly to reach 10 ft tall and 5 feet across filling in to form a dense compact pyramid tree of irregular form. Trains easily to an Asian form or bonsai.
Dense layered branches make an ideal home for nesting birds. A perfect companion to Japanese Maples, adding color and texture. Works well as a small tree in smaller spaces and large container plantings.
Black Dragon Japanese Cedar likes full sun to light shade and well-draining, slightly moist acidic, fertile soil. It is deer resistant and drought tolerant once established. Grows in USDA zones 5-9.
