Amethyst Falls Wisteria (Wisteria frutescens 'Amethyst Falls')
A compact, well-behaved native deciduous climbing vine prized for its fragrant, lavender-purple flower clusters that bloom profusely in the spring with occasional repeat blooms in the summer.
Grows in hardiness zones 5 through 9. Reaches 15 to 30 feet in height with a spread of 10 to 15 feet, maintaining a much more restrained and manageable habit than invasive Asian wisteria species. Thrives in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) for optimal flowering, though it tolerates partial shade (which reduces blooms). It requires moist, well-draining soil and a sturdy structure like an arbor, pergola, or trellis to climb.
Prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil, ideally ranging from 5.5 to 7.0, but adapts well to most average, fertile garden loams or clay mixes with good drainage.
The species (Wisteria frutescens) is native to the southeastern and-central United States, naturally inhabiting moist thickets, swampy woods, and stream borders.
Perfect for training over vertical garden structures where the fragrant, grape-like flower clusters can cascade downward. Ideal to soften fence lines or screen unsightly views. Can be easily grown in large pots on sunny patios or porches with proper support. Also can be aggressively pruned and trained into a small, self-supporting tree form. Highly attractive to butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
Ships with leaves in Spring and Summer and dormant without leaves in Fall and Winter.
