Alnus rubra (Red Alder)

A fast-growing, deciduous pioneer tree (40–90 ft) native to the Pacific Northwest, valued for rapid erosion control, nitrogen fixation, and shade. It thrives in moist, sunny, well-drained locations within USDA zones 6–9. It features distinctive reddish bark when wounded and is excellent for wet, disturbed, or poor-soil sites.

This medium-sized tree features a straight trunk and a rounded or conical crown. Its smooth, ashy-gray bark often appears white due to lichen colonization.

Plant in full sun to partial shade. Grows rapidly, can reach 18 feet in 5 years in ideal conditions. Fixes atmospheric nitrogen, improving soil fertility for other plants. Ideal for stabilizing disturbed or riparian areas.

Ideal for windbreaks. Highly wind resistant, even in severe, exposed maritime locations. Wood is used for furniture, pulp, cabinetry, and lumber because the wood is easy to work and stains well. The wood is highly prized for smoking salmon; the bark has been historically used for russet dyes and traditional medicines.  Attracts birds and supports pollinators.

Young trees may need protection from browsing animals. Protect young trees with wire fencing or apply Plantskydd deer repellent if deer, elk or rabbits are in the area. We sell Plantskydd on our website if you cannot find it locally.

Trees are short-lived (60–80 years) and best harvested for timber before 20 years for maximum quality.
