Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea) or Red Twigged Dogwood

Cornus sericea is a North American shrub known for vibrant red winter stems, white spring flowers, and white berries. It thrives in moist soils across most of the U.S. and Canada from Alaska to Newfoundland, south to California, Mexico, and Virginia, excluding the southeastern U.S..

Plant this fast-growing, multi-stemmed shrub in full sun to partial shade. It is ideal for rain gardens, erosion control , stream bank stabilization. It forms thickets, spreading via roots. Needs spring pruning for best color. Grows 3-10 feet tall. Hardy in zones 2-7. Tolerates clay soil and flooding. No fertilizer is needed.

Red osier dogwood's flowers provide very good pollen and nectar resources for pollinators, and its fruits are favored by birds and mammals. Its fruits are bitter but edible for humans —Native American peoples would often mix dogwood fruit with the fruit of sweeter species such as saskatoon serviceberries.
