Dicentra formosa, or Pacific Bleeding Heart

A low-maintenance, herbaceous perennial with delicate, fern-like foliage and rose-pink to purplish heart-shaped flowers that bloom in spring and sometimes again in fall. It thrives in moist, shaded woodland areas and can spread to form a groundcover.

The plant is known for its semi-dormancy in summer and is toxic if ingested.  Will grow to a height of 8 to 19 inches and can spread up to 3 feet wide. Native to Pacific Northwest, from British Columbia to California.

Likes moist, well-drained soil with good organic content. Prefers partial to full shade, especially in warmer climates. It can tolerate more sun in cooler regions. Does not do well in the dry climates or the Desert Southwest. Attracts hummingbirds, bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Hardy in USDA Zone 3-8.
