Black Twinberry (Lonicera involucrata)

Available as a 18-24 inch potted plant

This native deciduous shrub has paired, tubular yellow flowers and shiny, black berries that grow in pairs, each surrounded by reddish or purplish bracts that resemble a "little red nest".  It is a native plant of western North America, found in wet areas such as forest openings, wetlands, bogs, and streambanks, thriving in partial to full shade. It is also an attractive addition to wildlife gardens and hedgerows. Typically grows 6 to 12 feet tall.

Black twinberry  provides a nectar source for hummingbirds and butterflies. The berries are eaten by a variety of wildlife, including bears, small mammals, and game birds. The plant is also used for erosion control on streambanks and in wet areas. The berries are generally considered unpleasantly bitter and can be mildly toxic if consumed raw, so human consumption is not advised.

The shrub's native range extends from Alaska down through the western United States to Mexico, and east to the Rocky Mountain states and parts of Canada and the Great Lakes region. USDA Zones 4-10
