Simon Poplar (Populas simonii)
An impressive columnar deciduous tree known for its rapid growth and stately presence.
Potted trees 12-24 inches tall.
Simon Poplars are known for their use in landscaping projects, especially as windbreaks and shade trees. Due to their adaptability to different soil conditions and climates, they are often favored for reforestation and erosion control efforts. Simon is one of the most drought tolerant trees we have found. It will grow with minimum or no water in dry regions like Eastern Washington, Nevada and Utah. Give it a little more rain or water and it can grow 6-10 feet a year in wetter climates.
Thriving in full sunlight, Simon Poplar does well in different soil types, favoring well-drained soils but exhibiting tolerance to a range of conditions, including moist or clay-like soils. Its hardiness spans USDA zones 3 to 8.
This species typically grows to 50 to 70 feet. Its growth rate is rapid, making it an ideal choice for those seeking quick shade or a windbreak. The Simon Poplar features a sturdy trunk and a broad, spreading canopy, making a great shade tree.
The foliage of Simon Poplar consists of triangular, sightly rounded leaves with fine serrated edges, showcasing shades of green that turn a brilliant golden-yellow in the fall, creating a vibrant autumn display.
