'Bloodgood' London Planetree (Platanus x acerifolia 'Bloodgood')
A fast-growing, large, deciduous shade tree, known for its superior resistance to anthracnose compared to the species. Often used in urban areas where there is poorly draining soils, drought, salt, or air pollution. Excellent for large lawns, street medians, parking lots and residential areas due to its dense, cooling canopy. It’s ability to handle occasionally "wet feet" and poor drainage makes it useful in low-lying areas or near water features.
Grows to 80-100 feet tall and 50-70 feet wide. Bloodgood London Planetree features a rounded, open canopy and distinctive, shedding bark that peels off in thin, curly strips revealing creamy-white and olive-green patches. Fall leaf colors range from yellow, gold, and often reddish purple.
It is generally hardy in zones 5-9. Has large, maple like dark green leaves that typically turn a yellow-brown in the fall. Produces unique, ball-shaped spiky seed clusters that often persist into winter. Bloodgood London Planetree are an important habitat for a variety of wildlife.
