Acer griseum - Paperbark Maple - Cinnamon Reddish/Brown Peeling Bark
Acer griseum, also called paperbark maple, is a deciduous, oval rounded tree with upright branching. It has exfoliating copper to cinnamon reddish/brown bark and is one of the finest of all peeling bark trees. Bark peels into large curls and stays on the tree rather that falling to the ground.
Fall leaf color is red to red orange. Grows to 25 foot tall and 15-20 foot wide in full sun to partial shade in USDA Zones 5-8. Low maintenance and easy to grow in slightly acidic, medium moist, but well-drained soils. Acer griseum has no serious insect or disease problems and will tolerate clay soil.
An excellent small shade tree or landscape specimen. Makes a good choice for planting near a patio, sidewalk or building. Deciduous.
Also used for bonsai.
Propagation is difficult with very low seed germination (approximately 95% of seed produced is not viable). These seedlings have straight trunks and an unmatched root system. Side branches will develop in less than a year.
