Mock Orange (Philadelphus lewisii)

A deciduous shrub native to western North America, thriving in USDA Zones 4-8. This adaptable shrub prefers full sun to partial shade and well-draining soils, including sandy, loamy, and clay types, with a preference for slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.5). It grows to a height of 5-10 feet with a spread of 5-8 feet, forming an upright, arching habit. Known for its fragrant, citrus-like white blooms in late spring to early summer, it attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Is resistant to winds and has moderate deer resistance.

Mock Orange is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance aside from pruning after flowering to maintain shape. Its bright green foliage turns yellow in the fall, adding seasonal interest. This versatile shrub is ideal for hedgerows, naturalistic plantings, erosion control, and wildlife gardens.
