Populus trichocarpa, the black cottonwood is a large fast growing deciduous broadleaf tree. It is native to the western North America. Because of its fast growth it is used for lumber, pulp, firewood, windbreaks, privacy screens and for erosion control in stream bank restoration. It is the tallest western hardwood, growing to a height of 100 to 150 feet tall.
The Black Cottonwood has an aggressive root system, so it should not be planted within 100 foot of septic or drainage systems or close to foundations, buildings or sidewalks. This fast growing tree is very easy to grow if a water source is nearby. Likes full sun. USDA Zones 4-9.
