Apache White Fir (Abies concolor)
A stately evergreen tree native to the southwestern United States, particularly the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada. Thrives in USDA Zones 4-7 and Zone 8 on the West Coast. Preferring full sun to partial shade, it adapts to well-draining soils, including sandy, loamy, and gravelly types, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (5.5-7.0). Known for its silvery blue-green needles and symmetrical, pyramidal shape, this slow- to moderate-growing tree reaches heights of 30-50 feet with a spread of 20-25 feet at maturity. Highly drought- and cold-tolerant once established, it is ideal for large landscapes, windbreaks, and erosion control on slopes. Wind tolerant and has moderate deer resistance.
Available as 8-14 inch tall 1 year old potted trees.
Its fragrant needles and upright cones add ornamental value, making it a popular choice for parks, gardens and Christmas trees.
