This herbaceous perennial grows 4 to 18 inches tall. Blooms in the early spring with a single, large white flower that ages to pink or reddish-purple. It has three broadly ovate, pointed leaves in a whorl at the top of a naked stem and a single flower. The plant goes dormant in the summer after blooming.Β This long-lived plant is native to moist forests in western North America.Β  Its range extends from British Columbia down to California and east to Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.

Pacific Trillium needs rich, moist, acidic, well-drained soil and prefers shade to partial shade.Β  Grows in mixed, and deciduous woods in open to dense forests, often alongside trees like Douglas fir, redwood, oak and western hemlock. Β USDA zones

The petals are initially a showy, pure white. As the flower ages, the petals gradually turn pink, and sometimes a darker rose or maroon. The yellow anthers are also a prominent feature. The flower color change is a sign to pollinators, potentially indicating that the flower is past its peak pollination stage. Pollinators include beetles, moths, and bees.

Pacific trilliums should not be picked as picking the plant's leaves or flowers can critically injure or even kill it. The plant has an exceptionally long and fragile life cycle, and removing its foliage prevents it from storing enough energy to survive.
