Dwarf Yaupon 'Schillings' Holly

A dense, mounding, evergreen shrub. It has small, glossy green leaves, and a maximum height and width of about 3-4 feet. It is an extremely hardy, low-maintenance plant. It tolerates a wide range of soil and light conditions, as long as they are well-drained.

Thrives in full sun to partial shade, and is drought and salt tolerant once established. Flowers are inconspicuous, fragrant, greenish-white blooming in spring.  Requires regular watering until root system is established. This shrub is native to southeastern North America. The leaves were traditionally used by Native Americans as a tea and is now staging a comeback as several Tea Companies offer a Youpon blend. This is the only native plant in America that contains caffeine. Grows in USDA zones 7-9.

As a male cultivar, it does not produce berries but is an excellent pollinator for female Yaupon Hollies. Salt tolerant and drought tolerant once established.

Excellent for low-growing borders, foundation plantings, mass plantings, or as a container shrub. Makes an excellent bonsai.
