Bluedicks, also called ookow - (Dichelostemma congestum)

This spring-blooming, perennial corm is native to western North America, from British Columbia into California. It thrives in full sun or light shade and well-drained soils, especially in regions that experience a moist growth period in spring followed by a dry summer dormancy.

Typically growing to about 1-2 feet tall initially and up to 2-3 feet when in bloom, it produces striking lilac-purple clusters of 6-15 flowers atop slender, leaf-free stems, while its narrow basal leaves die back as flowering begins. Once established, it is low maintenance, drought tolerant, and attracts native bees and other pollinators.  In the garden, ookow shines in rock gardens, sunny slopes, mass drifts, or native meadow designs—provided the soil drains well and the plant is allowed its natural summer rest.
