Douglas Spirea (Spiraea douglasii )
Douglas spirea is a fast-growing, deciduous native West Coast shrub that features fragrant, pink, spire-like flower clusters from July to August and oblong, toothed leaves. It prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade and is native to streambanks, wetlands, and wet meadows.
The primary native range is along the Pacific coast, from Alaska south through the Pacific Northwest into northern California. It is also found east of the Cascade Mountains in states like Oregon, Idaho and western Montana, with isolated populations in Colorado, Missouri, and Tennessee.
Requires consistently moist to wet, acidic soil, which can be achieved through site selection or regular watering. Grows up to 3–6 feet tall and forms colonies through suckering. Aggressive pruning can be done in late winter to remove dead branches and control size. A balanced fertilizer can be applied in early spring and mid-summer for a healthy plant. Mulch can help the plant retain moisture and suppress weeds. Water in the morning to prevent fungal diseases.
Attracts pollinators and provides food and cover for birds and other wildlife. Creates thickets for wildlife habitat. Douglas spirea is suitable for rain gardens and can tolerate seasonal flooding. Great for Erosion control along streambanks and other moist areas. USDA zones 5-8, and zone 4 with wind protection.
