Red Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa)
A deciduous shrub native to a wide range of North America. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils and can adapt to a variety of light conditions, from part sun to 1/2 day shade, making it versatile for different landscapes. This plant is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8.
Typically reaching heights of 10 to 20 feet, the Red Elderberry forms a rounded, bushy shape. It is notable for its clusters of small, white flowers that bloom in early spring, followed by bright red berries in late summer. These berries are attractive to wildlife, but like all Elderberries are considered toxic to humans unless cooked.
The leaves of the Red Elderberry are compound, with multiple leaflets creating a lush, green appearance. In autumn, the foliage may turn to a yellow or red, adding seasonal interest.
The Red Elderberry is ideal for naturalized or wildlife gardens and is often used for erosion control due to its fast growth and spreading habit. It requires regular moisture and can tolerate wet conditions, making it suitable for riparian plantings or rain gardens. For best results, plant in an area with consistent moisture and protect from harsh, drying winds.
