Japanese Zelkova (Zelkova serrata)
A fast growing, deciduous shade tree (50–80 ft tall and 40-60 ft wide) known for its vase-shaped habit, exfoliating bark, and vibrant yellow, orange, or burgundy leaf color in autumn. It is an excellent, disease-resistant alternative to American Elm. Hardy in USDA Zones 5–8, It thrives in full sun and prefers moist, well-drained loam but tolerates clay and sand, and various pH levels.
Ideal for large landscapes, lawn specimens, or urban street trees due to its tolerance of compacted soil and pollution. Water regularly during the first 2–3 years to establish roots. Once mature, it is remarkably drought-tolerant. Space trees 30–40 feet apart (or up to 60 ft) to accommodate a wide canopy. Prune young trees to develop a strong central leader and proper branch spacing.
Attractive gray-brown bark exfoliates (peels) as the tree ages to reveal a showy orange inner bark. Its dense canopy makes it an excellent shade tree for lawns and parks.
Japanese Zelkova is a popular choice for bonsai due to its small leaves and strong branching structure.
