Western Sword Fern, Polystichum munitum

Western sword ferns cover the floor of the forests of the West Coast and Northwestern U.S. They are vigorous, dependable, and virtually maintenance free. Adaptable to difficult soil and do well even in hot, dry weather. Have deep green fronds that are attractive all year. Like well-drained acidic organic soil, but will tolerate wet conditions during the winter months. Will grow up to 3 foot tall and spreads by rhizomes and spores. Once established, these perennial ferns will fill an area with lush green forest like appearance. Hardy in USDA Zone 5-8.

Western Sword Ferns make an excellent evergreen ground cover in shaded or partially shaded areas. Sword ferns are a very drought tolerant plant in the summer once established. By planting now, they will be well rooted out by early summer and you will save lots of money on your water bill during the summer. Western Sword Ferns like moisture during the fall and winter months. Western Sword Ferns are best transplanted
from November thru March. All orders come with planting and care instructions.

Our ferns are well established and will be barerooted the day you order. We grow our ferns at our nursery in Oregon, they are not collected from the wild as is common. We our in Oregon's Willamette Valley....Summers are dry and summer temperatures range from 75-95 degrees F from May to October. This means our western sword ferns are adapted to hotter and drier summers than ferns grown in the more moist foggy coastal areas. The ferns are trimmed of their fronds for shipment.
The fronds will grow back quickly next spring forming a lush low maintenance groundcover.

These are large mature ferns...12 fit tight in a Medium Flat Rate Priority Mail Box and 25 fit in a Large Flat Rate Box. The second photo show what your ferns will look like when you receive them. This size of fern you would see in a retail garden center in 2-3 gallon pots for $10-$15 each. If you would like a larger quantity, send me a message and I will send you a quote. If you want smaller size ferns at a lower price, check out our listing for medium size and small size bareroot Western Sword Ferns.
