This is one of the earliest shrubs to bloom, with berries which resemblance coffee berries that can be used for preserves, jams, sauces and juice that are used for syrup, drinks, and to make alcoholic beverages. Eaten fresh or dried, need to be fully ripe to lose their tartness. Berries have an acidic tart flavor, best described as a mixture of cranberry and sour cherry. Can make a sauce similar to cranberry sauce when berries are pitted and boiled, and then ground with sugar and orange peel. Berries also attract birds and other wildlife.

Is  tolerant of a wide range of pH from 5.0 to 8.0. Will grow in many soil types including damp clay, medium moisture to well-drained soil. Use as a border, hedge or screen or as a specimen. Can be pruned for a dense hedge. Naturalizes well in woodland settings. Is deer tolerant.

The wood of Cornus mas is extremely dense and is valuable for crafting into tools or machine parts.
Seedling trees grown from seed like the trees we offer are Self-Pollinating/Self-Fertile, but most will fruit better with cross-pollination. The trees have both male and female flowers after they have flowered for several years. For the first year it flowers, all or most of the flowers will be male so usually you will not get fruit the first year it flowers.

Cross pollination can be from a different seedling of the same species like we offer here or a different grafted variety. All seedling trees are different genetically so they will pollinate each other.

So if you are planting this tree for fruit production, order another seedling and this will solve the cross pollination issue.
